The fictional 19th century clergyman 'Dr. Syntax’ at his bedchamber table with his lawyer in attendance prepares his will. From 'The Second Tour of Doctor Syntax, in search of consolation' by William Combe. The various tours following the escapades of Dr. Syntax were a satire on William Gilpin’s series of picturesque journeys to different parts of England. By Thomas Rowlandson (1757 - 1827).
