Booth, John
Publisher: Cambridge House Books, Westbury, Wiltshire 1978 Second Edition. Size: 10.25" x 8" (260mm x 204mm).
Antique Maps of Wales is intended as an introduction to the fascinating and profitable pastime of map-collecting for the reader with a particular interest in the Principality. In this book the author, himself a keen collector, reviews some of the more interesting maps in his own collection, commencing with the first individual map of Wales ever published. It was taken from a manuscript prepared by Humphrey Lhuyd of Denbigh and issued by Abraham Ortelius in Amsterdam in 1573. The reader is introduced to the hand engraving techniques and methods used in the production of early maps, as well as to information on how to identify the various editions and their publication dates. The illustrations provide an intriguing look at the development of Welsh mapping from the time of the Spanish Armada to the mid 19th Century.
This book is intended as an introduction to antique map collecting for the reader with a particular interest in the Principality.
