This work is the first volume in a series, which together will form a complete catalogue of the Library of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. It is not simply a list of books; the aim throughout has been to provide extensive annotation and a chronological method of arrangement, enabling the reader to see the extent of printed material available in his chosen field. Supporting the main text are comprehensive subject and ship indexes.
In this volume, comprising works on Voyages and Travel, the progress of maritime exploration from the Vikings to the present day has been surveyed. A special feature of the work is the inclusion of chronological tables of voyages at the beginning of each geographical section.
Forthcoming volumes in the series will include Biography, Atlases and Cartography, Shipping Companies, Naval History, and Piracy.
(Jacket) The arrest of Christopher and Bartholomew Columbus by Bobadilla, August 1500, after which they were sent back to Spain in chains.
From de Bry: Americae, pars IV'.
