Excellent Engraved Map of China and Japan by Keith Johnston F.R.S.E. c1869 Ed. (1st Ed1861) from Johnston's Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Published by W. Blackwood & Sons. Johnston was famous for his attention to geographic detail. The map include's the names of regions, rivers, lakes, mountains, and important cities. These earlier edition maps have hand coloured outline. Additional later wash colour to the Individual Counties makes this a unique edition of the map.This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. Publisher: Augsburg, Bencard. Engraved Plate area Approx: 190mm x 240mm. Map in overall good clean condition, slight stain to left margin where originally insert book plate with later hand colour. Note: Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a Professor of Hebrew, Mathematics and Ethics at the University of Dillingen until about 1680. Thereafter he obtained an important position as Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria. It was during his time in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria that his lifetime’s work as a cartographer received acclaim and recognition. Scherer’s world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century.

Covers from the Deccan plateau south as far as the Maldives and as far east as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Includes Ceylon or Sri Lanka. Shows the direction of the important Indian Ocean trade winds and their corresponding seasons. The regularity of the trade winds in the Indian Ocean generated active nautical trade routes well into antiquity. Published as plate no. (Paris: L'Imprimerie de la Republique, An V, 1797) Author: Bernizet, Sebastien; La Perouse, Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de, 1741-1788 Located on the far eastern coast of Russia. The Bay of Castries, named in honor of Marshal Castries, was explored between 27 July and 2 August 1787, and today houses the port of De-Kastri. The expedition led by La Perouse left Brest in August 1785, doubled Cape Horn, went up the west coast of America to Alaska via Easter Island and Hawaii,then returned to California and crossed the Pacific, to Macao. She continued to Samoa, the Tonga Islands, then Australia and Botany Bay, from where La Perouse wrote the last letter that reached Europe. Subsequently, the two corvettes of the expedition were to disappear at sea. Their wrecks were only found in 1826 by the English captain Peter Dillon in the archipelago of Santa Cruz.

Steel engraved b y Sidney Hall for A New General Atlas London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green; 1828-1830 Approx engraved area: 16.5" x 20.5" (420mm x 520mm) Outline and wash hand coloured map, good condition, some age tone, blank to verso, centre fold as issued. Notes: A note on the map next to the Pitcairn Islands reads: "This Island is inhabited by the children of some of the Mutineers of the Bounty who after going to Otaheite [Tahiti], where they married some of the Otaheitans, settled here in 1790." whereas another note next to the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) states "here Capt. Cook was killed on Sunday Feb. 14th 1779". This historically interesting and highly collectable map was produced by Sydney Hall (1788-1831) who was one of the most recognised and prolific British map engravers at the time when Britain excelled in map making. A genuine antique map over180 years old.

Approx engraved area: 4" x 5 5/8" (102mm x 143mm) Notes: This from Volume 1 of the French text edition published by Johann David Zunner 1684. The plates engraved for Zunner are close copies of the originals and still have French titles and names. A few are signed by there engravers: J.P. Aubrey, Johann J. Vogel and W.C. Daucher.

Rare Map of Southeast Asia, Indian Ocean and Australia "India Orientalis cum Adjacentibus Insulis Nova Delineatione ob oculos posita . ." Published: Augsberg 1730/42 India, Myanmar, India, Thailand. Bangladesh, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, India Orientalis. Matthaus Seutter. A scarce map of the East Indies and part of Australia, from the Atlas Novus. Excellent condition, copperplate engraved on hand laid paper with fine hand colour. Blank to verso and fold as issued. Approx engraved area: 480mm x 560mm (19" x 22") The map extends from Japan and Persia in the North, to the Maldives and Australia and the Ladrones in the South and West. One of the most notable features of the map is that Australia continues to be attached to Nova Guinea, albeit with some hesitation, as the image extends outside the inner neatline to convey this information -this in spite of the fact that there are 20 or more place names along Australia's Northern Coastline. The detail throughout Southeast Asia is excellent and the print style typically strong. The cartouche is one of the more ornate Seutter cartouches, with elaborate scenes from sea, land, jungle and mythology. Another genuine antique print over 290 years old from Rare Maps and Prints.

An attractive map of Asia by the cartographer Samuel Neele engraved on watermarked wove paper dated 1816.
