Excellent Engraved Map of Scotland Northern Sheet by Keith Johnston F.R.S.E. c1869 Ed. (1st Ed1861) from Johnston's Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Published by W. Blackwood & Sons. Johnston was famous for his attention to geographic detail. The map include's the names of regions, rivers, lakes, mountains, and important cities. These earlier edition maps have hand coloured outline. Additional later wash colour to the Individual Counties makes this a unique edition of the map.This atlas was one of the best world atlases published in England in the second half of the 19th century. MAP OF SCOTLAND SOUTH PART Pl.1 By Sidney Hall c1831. From A Topographical Dictionary of Great Britain & Ireland by John Gorton 1833. Published by Chapman & Hall, No 186 Strand Dec 1st 1831. Sidney Hall (1788?–1831) was a British engraver and cartographer well known and popular for his early nineteenth century atlases containing maps of the United Kingdom and of the ancient world reproduced from Hall's engravings. Hall made engravings for a number of international atlases at a time when cartography and atlases were very popular. John Gorton was an English writer, known as a compiler of reference works. His works include: A translation of Voltaire's Dictionnaire Philosophique, 1824; A General Biographical Dictionary, new edition, with a supplement by Cyrus Redding, bringing the work as far as 1850, in 4 vols. Excellent clean condition with Later Hand Colour highlights the 'Reference to the Hundreds' within the county. Blank to verso. Folds as issued. Approx Sheet Size: 200mm X 250mm. In contrast to the Mercator-Hondius series started in 1607, these maps follow Speed. They are slightly larger in size and show more detail. There is Latin text on the reverse and the title of the map in the language of the text appears outside the top boarder of the map.(Ref: R. W. MAP of British Isles engraved for Priscilla Wakefield's Family Tour c1804 Engraved, later hand colour Publisher/Artist: Darton and Harvey. London Good condition, hand outline colour, centre and multi folds as issued for publication insert, blank to verso. Close trim to upper right boarder. Approx engraved area: 17.5" x 14" (440mm x 360mm) Notes: A Family Tour through the British Empire Containing Some Account of Its Manufactures. Natural and Artificial Curiosities, History and Antiquities: Interspersed with Biographical Anecdotes: Particularly Adapted to the Amusement and Instruction of Youth. Priscilla was born in 1751 into a Quaker family in Stamford Hill, London, as one of ten children. She married the wealthy Edward Wakefield in 1771. She started a school and became involved in philanthropic activities. She set up the penny savings bank. During the marriage, the family wealth diminished, and Priscilla started to write for their living. She wrote children's books, travel books which were careful based on extensive research. The book Reflection on the Present Condition of the Female Sex; with Suggestions for its Improvement was published in 1798 by the radical publisher Joseph Johnson. She set up a bank of savings for the poor in 1798 in Tottenham (McVeagh 2009).
