The Town of Inverness c1824

The Town of Inverness c1824

The Town of Inverness. Drawn on the Spot by I. Clark. London, Published by Smith & Elder, Fenchurch Street, 1824. Hand-coloured etching and aquatint. Plate approx 475 x 629mm (18¾ x 24¾") External displayed mount approx size: 525mm x 700mm (20.75 x 27.75) From Clark’s ‘Views of Scotland’ contemporary hand coloured, wide margins, marginal toning from frame, light foxing. Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands, where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth, from the "Views in Scotland" series. The plates are signed I.Clark but it is generally accepted that these views are the work of the Scottish artist John Heaviside Clark, 1771-1836. He was a prolific artist, aquatinter and engraver, sometimes known as Waterloo Clark due to the sketches he made on the field directly after the Battle of Waterloo. He was also skilled in aquatinting, and certainly none of this series has a named engraver. However he is most famous for his engravings of Scottish towns and cities, admired both for the highly accurate attention to detail and the clarity and softness of aesthetics. The accuracy of the view has historical importance as it documents the radical changes being made to the landscape, a result of industrialisation, population growth and migration. Note to Buyer: As found, previously not conservation mounted so slight overall tone, and discolouration to the verso of the sheet. This exceptional aquatint print needs to be conservation mounted, framed and glazed. A genuine antique print over 190 years old.

Midwinter, 1719.) Copper Engraving, very fine impression. Bird's eye view in Kent, showing, in foreground, Sundridge Place,l with formal gardens, and church to the left, with small lake in front; to the right, behind Sundridge Place is Bore place, with large stables and walled gardens; fields behind, before Sharps Place is shown in the distance. Engraved by Johannes Kip after Thomas Badeslade for John Harris's 'History of Kent in Five Parts'. The title is on a scroll at the top of the plate, along with John Hyde's armorial. John Hyde, esq. was of Sundridge-place, and died in 1729, leaving two sons; John, of the Temple, esquire; and Savile. After which, this manor seems to have been divided into moieties, called, from their different situations, Sundridge Upland and Sundridge Weald manors, the latter of which became the property of John Hyde, esq. who residing at Quarendon, in Leicestershire, about the year 1773, pulled down the antient Placehouse, leaving only a farm house in its stead; and the former became the property of Savile Hyde, esq. Engraved area approx: 13¾ x 17" (350 x 430mm), with good margins. Fold as published. Excellent fine hand colour. Comes with existing wash hand colour mount with some age tone to boarders. Small 'nick' to top left corner of mount. This would not show when re-framed. External mount approx size: 20.5" x 23.5" (520mm x 595mm) ready for framing. Harris was a Doctor of Divinity, author and a Fellow of the Royal Society. For his History, he commissioned Badeslade, an artistically inclined surveyor, to illustrate his work. These drawings were then engraved by Johannes Kip (1652/3-1722), a Dutch draughtsman and engraver who moved to England, and who, together with Leonard Knyff, specialised in engraved views of English country houses.
