A large audience watches what could be an aqua drama, a specialty of Sadlers Wells Theatre. The theatre's proximity to the New River provided the necessary water to fill a special tank which provided the setting for several nautical performances such as 'The Seige of Gibraltar' staged in 1804. A view of Alexander Pope's house along the River Thames in Twickenham. Four figures are rowing a canopied boat on the river in the foreground with a forest in the distance behind the house in the background. Alexander Pope was an 18th century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and his translation of Homer. The money Pope made from this popular translation allowed him to move to this villa at Twickenham in 1719, where he created his now famous grotto and gardens. Abbey: 432. Born in 1717, Horace Walpole was a pivotal figure in 18th Century society, literature, art and architecture. Very Rare coloured aquatint: London Plate V. Drawn, Engraved & Published by William Daniell, No 9 Cleveland Street, Fitzroy Square, London, Jan.y 1, 1805. Coloured aquatint. Sheet approx 522mm x 776mm (20½ x 30½"). From William Daniell's 'Six Views of the Metropolis of the British Empire'. William Daniell RA (1769-1837) was one of the few artists of the period who was as skilled as an aquatinter as he was a painter. It was common practice to add engraved or etched lines to give shape to the tonal effect of the aquatint; this plate is pure aquatint, with no added lines, not even on the rigging of the boats. The unembanked Somerset House viewed from the opposite shore; Drury Lane on the skyline. Good overall condition with existing (aged) line and wash mount ready for framing or new mount and frame. Some offset to sheet boarder from old mount board not effecting image and not visible when mount in place. A scarce aquatint and very collectable.
