Overall condition good. This atlas reference reproduces some pages from five centuries of atlas-making, accompanied by cartographic and historical commentary. The maps are taken from Birmingham Central Library, one of Britain's foremost historical atlas collections. When Ptolemy's distance calculations led him to sketch the outline of the known world in the second-century AD, he not only became the first cartographer, but also founded an enduring art form. Bound into atlases, these maps plot the progress of humankind across the globe and provide a perspective on the world view through the centuries. A bequest to the Birmingham Central Library featured the first-ever atlases of the 15th century, including early atlases known as "Ptolemy's", after the ancient practitioner of the craft of cartography. There are also atlases by all the great cartographers: Mercator, De Wit and Waghenaer....

London in Maps Philippa Glanville

London in Maps Philippa Glanville

London in Maps by Philippa Glanville Publisher: The Connoisseur, London, 1972 1st Edition. Folio. 212pp. Hardcover housed in Very Good, age toned slipcaseSize: 14.5" x 8.5" (370mm x 215mm). Hard cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good, some fray to edges, small tear. Reproductions of nearly seventy contemporary maps, over a third of them in colour, illustrate dramatically the evolving topography of London since Roman times. Social change and political history, the limitations imposed by geography, the influence of climate and prevailing winds-all these are reflected in the present-day face of the capital. The Thames acted as the original highway and for a time the city walls restricted growth. Then they were breached and Overrun-the surge westwards being given impetus by the Great Fire. Later speculators and developers built the squares that begin to dominate the eighteenth-century maps. First the canals and new wide roads, then railways and trams, next Tube lines, and now motorways have contributed to the dismemberment of London, both uniting and absorbing the surrounding villages and creating the Greater London seen in today's maps. The superb reproductions of both manuscript and printed maps, many of them hand-coloured, show all these facets of London's life in a fascinating way; they are explained and supplemented by Philippa Glanville's authoritative text, making a book that is both decorative and instructive. Philippa Glanville is an Assistant Keeper at the London Museum, with a special interest in topography, and she describes vividly the eventful history of London's growth and development, as well as explaining, with numerous illustrations, the achievements of the great map-makers, such as Ogilby, Rocque, Morgan and Stanford. The map reproduced on the jacket is a hand-coloured copy of the 1574 edition of the map Londinum Feracissimi Angliae Regni Metropolis published in the atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum by G. Braun & F. Hogenberg, 1572.

The Printed Maps in the Atlases of Great Britain

The Printed Maps in the Atlases of Great Britain

The Printed Maps in the Atlases of Great Britain and Ireland Chubb. T. Publisher: Dawsons of Pall Mall London, 1974 2nd Reprint. Size: 11" x 9" (280mm x 230mm). Hardcover Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: None. Some general soiling but overall good. This work is believed to be the first attempt at a comprehensive description of the atlases of Great Britain and Ireland. Richard Gough, in his British Topography published in 1780, certainly mentions the maps and atlases known to him, but does not furnish any description of their contents. The study of British cartography was quite neglected until Sir H. G. Fordham (whose valuable works have been of great assistance to me) published, in 1907, his Hertfordshire Maps, a Descriptive Catalogue of the Maps of the County, 1579-1900, followed, in 1908, by Cambridge shire Maps. The need for recording, in convenient form, the mass of information available with regard to county maps was made plain by the interest displayed by students on the publication of these pioneer works. Others were encouraged to extend the scope, so that in addition to the counties mentioned, the maps of Cheshire, Gloucester, Lancashire, Norfolk (not yet published), Somerset, Stafford, Westmorland, Wiltshire and East Yorkshire have now been catalogued. An attempt has been made in the present volume to provide further aid to the student in a more comprehensive form. Unless otherwise noted copies of all the atlases described are in the British Museum. The titles of the works are given in full with the size of the title page in inches, the measurement being taken from the outside border line. If there is no border, then the size of the paper is given, the first measurement being from left to right. The arrangement is chronological, the various editions or reprints being placed immediately after the first issue. Any addition to, or change in, the later issues is noted. Cross references to the editions or reprints are given under the date of publication, with a reference to the number they bear. Any collection of county maps illustrating other works, e.g. Camden's Britannia, or issued in magazines, although not strictly in atlas form, is included and treated as an atlas. Every effort has been made to render the bibliography complete, but it is to be expected that some works may have escaped notice, for unrecorded atlases, or editions, are often discovered as the various collections in country houses are from time to time dispersed. I am greatly indebted to Mr. F. P. Sprent for his introductory survey of British Cartography, and his generous assistance during pubication; also to Mr. J. W. Skells and Mr. H. Beharrell, my former colleagues in the Map Room, British Museum for their help readily given in the compilation of the biographical notes. These notes, although by no means exhaustive, have entailed a considerable amount of research, and a large amount of information has been brought to light for the first time. I am also indebted to Mr. George Goode, of the Cambridge University Library, for placing at my disposal the fine collection of atlases under his charge, a collection which has been mainly formed during his long term of service in that institution. It is hoped that the present work will enable collectors to identify any stray maps that may have been abstracted from the atlases in which they were issued. My publishers, The Homeland Association, Ltd., have gallantly taken the risk of publication, and I feel that they, in company with the printers, Messrs. Barnicott and Pearce, of The Wessex Press, Taunton, are to be congratulated on the manner in which they have carried through a lengthy and tedious undertaking. Investing in Maps

Investing in Maps

Investing in Maps Baynton-Williams. R. Publisher: Barrie & Rockliff, The Cresset Press.1969. Size: 12" x 8.5" (305mm x 215mm). Hardcover Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: Soiled and scuffed. Some general soiling but overall good. Summary - Since 1920, when map collecting began in earnest, there have been many specialised books published on the subject of old maps and atlases. Most of them, written by the great authorities in the field, deal either with museum pieces and extreme rarities, or with only one aspect of the subject. This is the first comprehensive guide for beginners and new collectors, for it not only discusses the range of maps which can be found on the market today, and gives, as far as possible, approximate indications of their value, but also describes the methods by which the maps were made, and the men who made them. Equally, the wide range of material covered contains much that will be of interest to the experienced collector and the dealer. A recent survey of antiques by The London Times Saturday Review' has shown that over a period of twenty years old maps and atlases, together with old master prints, have proved to be a superlative investment. Certainly maps can claim as wide an appeal, to the uninitiated as to the collector, and this book aims both to suggest ways in which to develop a collection and also to provide fascinating reading. Its special features include an index and guide to map-makers, engravers and publishers whose names will frequently be encountered in the course of collecting The sixteen pages of faithful colour reproductions, coupled with the black and white illustrations throughout the book, have been carefully chosen to demonstrate the development of antique maps printed between 1540 and 1850. Roger Baynton-Williams is a partner with his father in the largest business in Britain dealing in old topographical prints. Their gallery is situated in SouthKensington and has been established for more than forty years.

Mapping for Money by Zandvliet - Sold

Mapping for Money by Zandvliet - Sold

Mapping for Money - Maps plans and topographical paintings and their role in Dutch overseas expansion during the 16th and 17th centuries. Zandvliet. K. Publisher: Batavian Lion International.1998. Size: 12.5" x 9" (320mm x 230mm). Hardcover Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: Soiled and scuffed. Some general soiling but overall good. Introduction: In 1619, 17 years after it was founded in 1602, the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) was granted a privilege from the States General relating to maps. This privilege stipulated that in order to disseminate information about the Company's chartered area, whether in printed form or otherwise, the express permission of the Company's Board of Directors, the so-called Heren XVII, was required. The Directors emphasised the significance of geographical information in their request for this privilege, writing that VOC servants were instructed to collect such knowledge on a daily basis. These servants mapped seas, straits, and coastlines and wrote treatises about the areas in which the VOC traded. The documents they produced were used by specialised VOC servants to prepare general maps and instructions. By that time an official mapmaker, and his assistants, worked in Amsterdam to update and correct the VOC's maps. The 1619 privilege shows the VOC's concern for maps, one that was also shown by its Atlantic counterpart, the West India Company (Westindische Compagnie,WIC). Shortly after its foundation in 1621, the WIC bought all the maps from the estate of the deceased 'founding father' of Dutch overseas cartography, Petrus Plancius. During the years of the chartered companies, between 1602 and 1795, hundreds of mapmakers produced topographic maps and building plans relating to the Dutch overseas territories, as well as charts for the navigation to and from these territories. Some of the mapmakers had the Dutch Republic as their home base, but most worked in the territories overseas. This study aims at an analysis of the role of maps and mapmakers during the first century of Dutch overseas expansion in the context of the Companies. The framework for this study is an institutional one, attempting to bring together and analyse the vital resolutions and decisions concerning mapping and mapmakers. As such, it does not aim primarily at a description of the most important maps or mapmakers, nor at an analysis of printed maps of the Dutch overseas territories produced by mapmakers working outside the sphere of the Companies. Within an institutional framework, the attention is focused on the role played by the different creators of cartographic and related documents: chart makers, land surveyors, military engineers, architects and artists. With this approach it is hoped to gain an insight into the role of maps and their makers within and, to some extent, outside the companies - for navigation, defense, administration, settlement, and the diffusion of geographical information - and to look at how maps and topographic paintings were images of power and artifacts commemorating events of the time.

The Map of the British Isles of 1546 - SOLD!

The Map of the British Isles of 1546 by Edward Lynam - Assistant Keeper in the British Museum, Honorary Secretary og the Hakluyt Society. Publisher: The George H. Beans Library, Jenkintown 1934. Size: 12" x 9.5" (305mm x 240mm). Hardcover Slip Case Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: N/A Overall condition Good. Facsimile copy of map laid on linen backing. Introduction: The present map is an historic document, for it was the first map ever engraved of the British Isles apart from those published in editions of Ptolemy's Geographia. These can hardly be compared with it, since they were little more than diagrams, devoid of topographical detail or modern information, and found in early manuscript copies of Ptolemy's work. The scholars of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries refused, however, for a long time to discard them owing to Ptolemy's high reputation as a scientific geographer and to the general ignorance of cartography. A modern map of the British Isles which Sebastian Münster published in his edition of the Geographia in 1540 was a great improvement upon them but was much inferior to the present work. Although the map of 1546 is a landmark in the history of English cartography, the identity of its author and the circumstances of its publication are still very obscure. It is attributed, tentatively, to George Lily on account of the letters GLA, supposed to stand for "Georgius Lilius Anglus", which appear on a scroll above three lilies at the bottom of the cartouche. Lily was a son of William Lily, the famous grammarian. Leaving Oxford without...

American Maps and Map Makers of the Revolution Guthorn. P. J. Publisher: Philip Freneau Press Monmouth Beach N.J. 1966. Size: 12.25" x 10.25" (10mm x 260mm). Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: N/A Overall condition good. Foreward: The serious student will welcome this important addition to the literature of the American Revolution. It is a unique compilation and fills a serious void. The book is arranged in orderly fashion. A short biography of each map maker is followed by a list of his known maps. Though frequently fragmentary and based on secondary sources, many of the biographical sketches appear in print here for the first time. A great number of the maps are likewise newly discovered. Each map is briefly described and its repository indicated. The introduction gives additional valuable data. The author is a prominent New Jersey surgeon who has found time in his busy practice to pursue an unusual avocation. Dr. Guthorn has been a serious student of American maps for many years. Much of the preliminary work on this volume was done at the New York Public Library and led to much interesting discussion between us. I am happy to see the author's efforts in print. GERARD L. Christopher Saxtons 16th Century Maps - The counties of England and Wales Ravenhill, W. Publisher: Chatsworth Library.1992. Size: 12" x 8.5" (305mm x 215mm). Hardcover Condition: Good. Dust Jacket: Good. Summary: Christopher Saxton was responsible for producing the first printed Atlas of the English and Welsh counties which, when published in 1579, was the first uniform national atlas to appear for any country. In the 1570s under the authority of Queen Elizabeth I, Christopher Saxton surveyed the whole of England and Wales and, considering the means at his disposal, his maps are not only extremely attractive but are also incredibly accurate and well produced. The original set of maps from which this edition is prepared is held in the Library at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, and besides being one of the finest hand-coloured examples to survive it is also one of only three known privately owned copies in existence. The introduction by Emeritus Professor William Ravenhill of Exeter University reveals not only the fascinating context in which the maps were made but also the methods and techniques used by Christopher Saxton to produce his masterpiece.
